Meet Mrs. Doylestown International 2020: Emily Kenniston

Doylestown residents and visitors know this town is filled with fabulous dining establishments, exceptional shops and boutiques, and tons of entertaining things to see and do. But, did you know that we also have a Mrs. Doylestown?

It was such a pleasure to make the acquaintance of Emily Fitzpatrick Kenniston, Mrs. Doylestown International 2020. Representing Doylestown, Emily will compete for the title of Mrs. Pennsylvania International in April 2020.

Read on to learn more about this extraordinary woman who is representing Doylestown as Mrs. Doylestown International 2020.

Exploring Doylestown: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Who is Mrs. Doylestown International 2020?

Emily Kenniston: I’m a happily married Christian wife and mother who is honored to be part of a community as wonderful as Doylestown. I’m married to my college sweetheart, Dillon, and in January we will have been together for 12 years! I’m a mommy to one little girl, Brielle, who was born last January at the fabulous Doylestown Hospital.

As for my education and professional background, I’m a Penn State Berks graduate and have a degree in elementary education. I was a full-time teacher before deciding to leave that field and be a stay-at-home mom when my daughter was born. While being a mommy is my full-time job, I do have several side “hustles” as well: I work for an online clothing boutique, The Curated Closet, as a brand rep and model, model through Look Models and Actors Agency in town, work at the Chaddsford Winery at Peddler’s Village, and teach a class at a homeschool co-op/private school hybrid in Newtown.

What made you decide to compete for the title of Mrs. Doylestown International 2020?

While I have long been interested in the fashion and beauty industries, what really attracted me to participate in the International Pageant system was the chance to make a difference through my chosen platform, which is Birth Trauma and Postpartum Depression/Anxiety Awareness and Assistance. In addition to this aspect, I was excited to get the chance to volunteer in and around the community that I love so much, and to promote local small businesses during my time as Mrs. Doylestown International.

What was the process like?

The process to become Mrs. Doylestown International consisted of an initial online application. Once that was approved, I had to complete a phone interview where I spoke with the pageant director about my chosen platform. The pageant director made it clear that the phone interview was an important first step, as the interview portion of the actual pageant is 50% of your score as a contestant! Once I passed the initial interview, I was awarded a local title, Mrs. Doylestown International 2020, and I received my sash and tiara.

How do you fulfill your role as Mrs. Doylestown International 2020?

The most exciting part for me with regard to fulfilling this role is the chance to be active in my beloved community of Doylestown. I love promoting small businesses in this area and I’m eager to/looking for ways to volunteer in the community. I appeared at the Doylestown Arts Fest, which was a fun experience, and I’m looking forward to making other appearances at upcoming events as well as volunteering in the community, especially as the holidays approach.

What causes are near and dear to your heart?

I chose my platform of Birth Trauma and Postpartum Depression/Anxiety and Awareness (a mouthful, I know!) because I am a traumatic birth survivor. I will be forever grateful to the incomparable doctors, nurses, and staff at Doylestown Hospital who saved my life and cared for both my daughter and myself so diligently after her birth. As someone who has experienced the isolating agony of postpartum depression and anxiety, speaking about these issues so that women who experience them do not feel alone is something about which I am passionate.

It is also important to me to discuss ways that women who are suffering in these ways can practice self-care techniques to help themselves heal.  I know how lonely PPD/PPA can feel and I realized that having someone who was in the public eye speak about these issues on a public platform would have helped me feel less isolated.

I’m passionate about the fact that every pregnancy, every baby, every mother, and every birth story is worthy of being spoken about. I’m in the process of trying to create a documentary featuring local women sharing their birth stories and struggles. It’s my hope that this documentary can be used in hospitals and counselors’ offices to help women who struggle in these ways.

How does Mrs. Doylestown International 2020 give back to the community?

Any way that I can! Since 2015, I have run a volunteer group called “The Pennsylvania Princess Project” that recruits actors to portray princesses, and occasionally superheroes, at local hospitals, parties, and events. I do this as a ministry; I always tell people who ask “how much we cost” that if they feel led to donate they can, but I have no set prices since I believe every child has the right to meet their favorite princess, regardless of parental finances. I have had the chance to do a couple of local events recently and I’m excited to do more.

What is the next step as Mrs. Doylestown International 2020?

In April 2020 I will be traveling with my husband to Altoona, Pennsylvania for the pageant weekend. I will have to complete an in-person interview, as well as take part in activewear and evening gown competitions. I am competing against some incredible women and I am excited to see which one of us takes home the crown!

Thank you to Emily Kenniston, Mrs. Doylestown International 2020, for sharing your wonderful story and representing our town. We wish you the best of luck in the upcoming Mrs. Pennsylvania International pageant in April 2020!
